February Love

How is it February ? Really . How is it February?

This life we are living is so odd isn’t it. It feels like we’ve been locked up forever, but I’m struggling to find myself about to write the date as 1st February 2021. My brain is playing tricks and my sense of time has completely gone to pot.  Without little markers in the diary for “special” days it really would be Ground hog day, so I’m now being extra on the case when  it comes to marking the seasons in the house  with my decorating. Last spring when we were just into lockdown and Easter came around, I was a total grump and didn’t bother with the usual eggs and bunnies or bringing out any of the spring quilts. I felt what’s the point. No one could visit and I’d just be wasting my time but as the months have rolled by, I have realised that marking this passage of time is all part of keeping our selves sane and keeping that normal routine going . Seeing  old makes, thinking up new seasonal decorations or trying new themed recipes makes me smile and my word that’s what we need right now. So, as we move into February, as well as expecting the usual snow that comes with this month most years, it is time to start to mark the move towards Spring with hearts and flowers and of course don’t forget the pancakes  on 16th.

My old Valentine quilt was looking a bit out of place with my current style, so I decided I needed a new splash of something or other,  so I’ve come up with this cushion featuring my Fly Away Heart design and it seems to have had a very surprising fan in the shape of our cat Hollie.  She’s a very needy moggy and but can never be relied upon to look cute on queue but for some reason today when I’ve been trying to photograph my cushion on a fresh white whole cloth quilt, she decided today was her day to be in the spotlight. So, whilst the pictures may not show that much detail, I thought you’d all find these much funnier….

The envelope block is foundation pieced and if you’d like to give it a go just click here for a free downloadable pdf version that you can resize with your printer to suit your project. I made a  12 inch block and then used an asymmetric layout for my cushion. The little fly away hearts are made from wool felt  and were applied after the straight line quilting to give that fly away look. I think this would also look cute as a mini quilt or you could be used to make a great stationery folder cover too. Feel free to download the foundation piecing sheet and I’d love to see anything that you make so please do share using #flyawayheartpattern

See you again soon and keep safe.
